What Is SMO and Why You Should Care?

SMO stands for “social media optimization”, a process that uses social media to increase awareness of a brand or product. It has the same goal as SEO in that they both aim to drive traffic to a website. Today, you can see SEO companies including SMO in their services. There’s a reason for that.

In the past, social media was seen only as a content-sharing platform. But now, social media is more than that: it is a powerful vehicle for marketing and customer service. One can interact with existing or potential customers on a personal level via social media.

With this growing significance, social media tied itself to the overall SEO strategy. It logically follows that SEO companies would offer SMO as well. Companies may focus on different social media, but here are the common ones:

Facebook
This is the largest of them all with 1.3 billion active monthly users. The potential for a wide reach is alive here. Whoever your targets are, they’re probably on Facebook.

Google+
Forget about the jokes saying no one is on Google+; it is now a formidable social media with 300 million active monthly users. Google+ is a good platform for targeted marketing.

Twitter
Twitter has over 280 million active monthly users. A substantial following gives a strong boost in brand building.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn has less users than the three above, but its unique strength lies in its B2B-inclined nature and its professional atmosphere.
